What does Private Medical insurance include?

In/Day Patient

In/day patient covers acute conditions where you need a hospital bed for the day or overnight.  This is often included in the ‘core’ cover of most policies and covers the cost of treatment, accommodation, meals, nursing care and drugs and dressings.

Additional options

Policies are usually modular which means most providers will enable you to include additional options to your policy, these may include alternative therapies, chiropractic, dental, optical, Travel, physiotherapy and psychiatric treatments.

Outpatient cover includes the time spent with a consultant and diagnostic tests such as MRI, CT, PET scans, blood tests and x-rays. Most private healthcare providers offer full outpatient cover and the option to reduce the limit to a monetary amount.

Cancer Cover

Most insurers will include a basic level of cancer cover within their policy. This often covers surgery, Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, hormone therapy and palliative care. Some policies will also provide additional cover for experimental treatment, wigs and prosthetics.

The hospitals you will have access to vary for each provider, however, you will have a choice of UK locations. You can expect to receive access to hospital groups such as BMI, Nuffield Health, Ramsey and Spire hospitals. Central London hospitals are not always included in your standard policy but may be included at an additional premium.

Consultant fees and guidelines

Most insurers will have a set guideline of what they will and won’t pay towards a consultant’s fees.
